July 29, 2011

For Immediate Release:

Headline: Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club donates $1,000.00 to Lakewood-Townsend Ambulance Service

Copy: Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club of Townsend held a fundraiser recently for the benefit of the Lakewood-Townsend Ambulance Service. The event held at Birch Hills Resort in Townsend was a great success and attracted a large crowd. The fundraiser was part of a “Family Fun Day” held by Red Arrow that included a membership meeting, group trail ride and a party on the beach at Birch Hills.

Thanks to Dawn and Renee of Birch Hills for hosting this event and to Hillcrest Lodge next door who sent their Bass Fishing Tournament attendees over to the party. Team Hawg Seeker donated $100.00 of entry fees entry fees to our event and we thank them also.

Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club is a year round club that includes both snowmobile and ATV enthusiasts. Townsend is located right on the 89 mile long Nicolet State Recreational Trail allowing both snowmobile and ATV/UTV access south to Gillett and north to the Michigan border and beyond. The club maintains area trails year round.

Townsend is one of the highest elevation areas in Wisconsin and that helps us keep our snow!!! The Carter hills between us and Carter are 1,781 feet above sea level vs Oconto at 530 feet...it does make a difference. The highest range is just northwest of us in Forest County at Sugerbush Hill...that area is 1,939 feet above sea level. Kent Tower Hill in Langlade County is 1,903 feet.

All Price County trails are now open including several multi-use trails that welcome recreational motorized vehicle use.

The new 9.5-mile Solberg Lake Trail located just northeast of Phillips is now open and allows ATVs, off-road motorcycles, and UTVs up to 50" wide. This trail connects to the 70-mile Flambeau Trail System at Sailor Lake. The south parking area is located at N10574 E. Solberg Lake Road about 3 miles from downtown Phillips and the north parking area is south of Hwy. 70 on Forest Road 139.

The Flambeau Trail System (70 miles) in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is open to ATVs, off-road motorcycles, and UTVs up to 50" wide. Last week's heavy rains and winds caused washouts and areas with downed trees. Use caution when riding the trails as some of these areas are still being worked on. The Tuscobia State Trail (62 miles) is open to ATV & UTV use; the trail has recently been graded and it is in good condition; however, there are still a few rough areas. The Flambeau River State Forest trail (38 miles) is open to ATVs & UTVs and the trail is reported in good conition; however, trail construction is underway near Snuss Blvd., south of Hwy 70. Gravel is being added to the trail surface and trail users should use extreme caution and drive at speeds that allow reaction time to avoid heavy equipment and dump trucks. The Georgetown Trail (16 miles) west of Phillips is open to ATVs, UTVs, and off-road motorcycles and it is in good condition. There is logging taking place in a section near the north end of the trail and it is rough in that area.

Special Recreation Permit HORROR STORIES

SEND US YOUR Special Recreation Permit HORROR STORIES

Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Last Thursday, BRC blasted a media release regarding our efforts to pass legislation amending the Special Recreation Permit (SRP) process. BRC Calls for Legislation to Amend Recreation Permitting Process

Since October 2002, BRC has been trying to convince land managers to streamline the recreation permit process. Although the regulations allow wide discretion, allowing numerous ways to make it quick and easy to apply for a permit, the agencies have refused. Sadly, they proceed to tighten the recreational permit noose even tighter.

Recently, small "club rides" have been threatened with fines for simply having small group rides on open, designated routes. Historic and popular competitive events, with little or no past history of problems, are now subjected to expensive analysis and unworkable management requirements. Special interest groups have learned that mere threats of opposition will paralyze land managers with fear and prevent applications from even being processed, let alone approved.

BRC has come to the conclusion that legislation is needed to fix the SRP issue. While we generally support using permits as a tool to managing recreation use and obtaining a fair return for commercial uses of public land, it has become obvious that this is no longer possible. The recreation permit process is overly bureaucratic, expensive for both agencies and the public, and implemented in an unfair and arbitrary manner.

The recreation permit process must be revised. We believe that legislation is necessary to fix the problem, and we need your help!

As you know, we depend on our members and supporters to help us pass key legislation. Today we are asking you to sign our petition in support of a legislative fix to the SRP Process. SIGN THE PETITION HERE.

We are also asking our members to send us your recreation permit horror stories. SEND YOUR PERMIT HORROR STORIES HERE.

Message Boards Are Still Being Worked On

I should have been out riding, at least in my head. Work continues on restoring the forums to their previous state tonight. Hopefully we will be back up and running tomorrow, but I will keep the blog updated.

On a second note, we will be filming another law enforcement / tpa event in Auguest over at the Black River State Forest. This video event will enhance our training programs for ambassadors as well as give an inside look at our law enforcement partners day to day operation for patrolling our trail systems.

Our forums are still down! Drat!

We apologize for the interruption of service to our new forums, and we are still working hard to restore service. For those who are wondering, our mySQL server had to be re-installed late last night after a service upgrade failed, and we are now working on restoring a backed up database.

Or, in laymen s terms, the part of the server that stored all the information such as posts, profile information, etc. was damaged during a routine service upgrade (boy do we cringe at updates) and had to be re-installed. Your data was not compromised and service should be restored soon.

Lakewood's Resort Gets Huge Grant

A grant for 163-thousand dollars was presented to the Lake Woods resort in Cable, Wisconsin today.

The resort applied for the grant that would convert their old boiler system into a more environmental friendly and cost effective system, buy using pellets.

The change will save the resort 72-thousand dollars in just the first year of converting.

If you are willing to convert, you were eligible for the grant.
Out of 14 applicants, the Lake Woods Resort was number one, giving them the largest grant available.

Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, Stephanie Klett, says this change will have a positive impact on the economy.

"It's also going to help the local economy because you can buy the wood burning pellets here locally. There are pellet dealerships and manufactures in Cable and Hayward, so it's going to help the local economy as well," Klett says.

The Lake Woods resort has been around for 103 years and has been owned by the Rasmussen family for over five-generations.
