Vilas County Outdoor Recreation Plan Survey

Vilas County
Outdoor Recreation Plan
2014-2019

Vilas County Forestry, Recreation, & Land Department is working with North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission to update its Outdoor Recreation Plan for 2014-2019.

The new five-year outdoor recreation plan will be used to identify new projects for development, as well as which local government parks, county parks, or county forest segments need to add additional recreation facilities (like trails, buildings, boat landings, or camp sites).  The plan enables Vilas County Forestry Department, and all municipalities within the county, to be eligible for competitive federal and state outdoor recreation grant money. Non-profit conservation organizations (NCOs) are eligible to participate in the Knowles–Nelson Stewardship Program too. NCOs may adopt or carry out recommendations from this county outdoor recreation plan or use their land management plans that are required for participation in the stewardship programs.

This plan assesses the existing recreation system in Vilas County, identifies recreation needs based upon public input and recreation standards, sets forth goals and objectives to be used as guidelines in formulating outdoor recreation improvements, and establishes recommendations for improving the recreation system over the next five years. Submission of this report to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources establishes eligibility for the County and local governments to apply for a variety of Federal and State Aids. Non-profit groups, foundations, and the general public may also use this document to coordinate their own private efforts for developing outdoor recreation facilities.
